BookFlip

Bookflip is a platform designed to help readers save money by uploading and exchanging books with each other.

Overview

The problem: we have observed that readers have difficulty finding books they are interested in on our platform. How might we improve our app so that users can easily find books they’re interested in based on an increase in books being rented and reviews?

The solution: to conduct user research and develop features that allow users to exchange books and discover new ones at a low price point.

Role & Tools

Role: (UX Researcher, UI Designer, prototyping & Testing)

Team: Abby Gonzalez,  Aseel Qali

project type: Brand New Mobile App Prototype

Duration: date or time

Tools: Figjam, Figma, Zoom, Storythat, & Trello.

Research

We created a Google survey and interviewed readers via Zoom and in person. We discussed problems that we’ve encountered as readers ourselves and defined what answers we wanted to discover based on our problem. We learned from our research that readers prefer physical copies of books, they do not have a defined system on getting rid of older books, and they are more likely to read a book based on others’ recommendations. Thriftbook solves a similar problem as it allows readers to source books at a low price point. However, this app does not provide a way for readers to swap out the books they no longer want to read. Our app builds a community of readers and creates a sustainable solution to sourcing new books to read. Additionally, the library provides a similar service to ours; however, our app provides a user-friendly way to search for new books by category and trend. Discovering new books on the typical library app is difficult as they do not provide categories to browse.

  1. Do readers prefer a physical copy of a book?

  2. How do readers find books they want to read?

  3. How do readers obtain the books they want to read?

  4. Do readers mind spending money on books?

  5. What do readers do with books they don't want to keep?

“ I like reading a physical copy of the book because it's a magical experience from the smell of a new book to the touch of the book and when you have a copy of the book it makes the journey even more magical.”
-Luisa, 20 years old college students

Affinity Diagram

Definition & Ideation

We aggregated the data from our interviews into an affinity diagram. We discovered from doing so that our readers do not have an effective solution of getting rid of books they no longer want to read. Based on this information, we wanted to create a feature where users can easily upload books they no longer want to keep and exchange them with others. We created a user flow based on this feature. We visualized our user, Caroline, and her journey to discovering Bookflip which alleviated her frustrations.

User Flow

Prototyping

Each team member created a low-fidelity prototype based on our user findings and competitor analysis. We voted o  which design to proceed with and chose option 2

User Testing & Outcomes

From testing our digital prototype, we received the following feedback:

Icons needed for home navigation bar

Titles need to be clear and defined

Uploading a book was confusing - needed to be streamlined and in one place.

Conclusion & Future Opportunities

From this case study, we learned that readers love reading physical copies of books and are eager to have a cost efficient way to source new books and repurpose old ones. We found that user research was crucial in developing our app as we frequently referenced it for user flows and iterating our wireframes. We believe we created an effective solution for readers that is easy to use. Moving forward, we hope to further develop the app by creating a sense of community through online book clubs. We also want to integrate a Wishlist feature so users can be notified when the book they want to read is available again for renting. We loved creating Bookflip and look forward to its future.
